Homeless return under Main Street viaduct in South Bend

The homeless are back under the viaduct.

Last winter, the city of South Bend broke up an encampment under the Main Street viaduct. Seven months later, tents have not made a return, but the blankets and cardboard accompanying the homeless have.

One homeless person told the South Bend Tribune he lived under the bridge for over four years with others because “there’s safety in numbers.”

South Bend Police and code enforcement officials are monitoring the site. A South Bend city ordinance prohibits encampments in public spaces.

For most of these people homelessness is a lifestyle choice; it may be a result of mental illness. More Section 8 housing is not going to solve their problems.
