St. Joseph County Council passes on raising property taxes

It appears the St. Joseph County Council will not vote on a proposed ordinance to raise property taxes.

That, from Councilman Jamie O’Brien in a Facebook post saying as such, along with the word “Yippee.”

A 2008 “Circuit Breaker” caps property taxes paid by homeowners and businesses. The ordinance would have increased rates for property owners whose taxes haven’t reached the state maximum.

The Council did give unanimous approval to contributing money for a project to upgrade the South Shore Line.

The project would double track the line between Michigan City and Gary. It’s hoped that the double track would cut the travel time between South Bend and Chicago down to 90 minutes.

“The Council did give unanimous approval to contributing money for a project to upgrade the South Shore Line.”??? WTF??? Are you kidding me? Why would a single penny of our tax money go to this fraudulent cause? Is it even legal for our tax money to be used for this? Is the South Shore a county or State owned non profit organization? Look at the amount of dollars that will be spent to get a very few people to Chicago. Why do we want to get people to Chicago? How is that a benefit for us? There is definitely some shady dealings going on here!
