A South Bend man who got swept away in the St. Joseph River Saturday has been found dead.

41-year-old Donald “Donnie” A. Lewis went into the water shortly after 6:15 a.m. Saturday. It’s believed by Indiana Conservation Officers that Lewis was trying to retrieve a pair of shoes that were tossed from a nearby shore. He slipped and ended up being swept further into the river by the current.

A witness says Lewis was struggling in the water and didn’t see him make it back to shore.

Sunday morning, the body of Lewis was pulled from the river. WSBT says the coroner confirmed it was indeed Lewis.
