A man is dead and another man is in custody after what was initially labeled a suspicious death in South Bend.

Officers were called to a home in the 800 block of West Riverside Court at about 12:30 a.m. Thursday on a report of an assault. When officers arrived, they discovered a 48-year-old Roy Franklin Martinez bleeding.

The St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office says the Martinez’s condition worsened and CPR was attempted, but he was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

After interviewing witnesses, officers arrested 32-year-old Kennedy Kafatia on an initial charge of Battery to an Endangered Adult Resulting in Death, which is a level 2 felony that carries a maximum 30 year prison term.

That charge could change later pending a prosecutor’s review and autopsy results Thursday afternoon. Formal charges have not yet been filed.
