South Bend seeking $1.5 million to restore Lafayette building

South Bend officials are trying to safe a building that has long been neglected.

The historic Lafayette building has been deemed a safety hazard. The empty shell of a building was named one of the top 10 most endangered properties in the state by Indiana Landmarks.

The building opened in 1903 as South Bend’s first office building, but ABC 57 is reporting that it was last occupied in 2011, and since then, bricks have been falling from the sides of the building, the roof is damaged, and the skylights are smashed out.

The South Bend Department of Community Investment would like to spend $1.5 million to renovate the building once it officially takes possession of the property.

I want 1.5 million to spend! September 6, 2017 at 9:06 am

I would like to spend 1.5 million too. Where can I get the money? I will call it a community investment even though it will only benefit private entities…More crap from our illustrious officials. Who occupied the building in 2011? Who owns the building now? Just useless info that we don’t need to know I guess…We just need to pay for it because someone decided they want us too.
