UPDATED: South Bend Police officer reportedly hurt in training bunker accident

A police officer was injured at the South Bend Bomb Squad training bunker Tuesday.

It happened just before noon Tuesday. Police Sgt. Harvey Mills was initially taken to Memorial Hospital before being airlifted to Indianapolis for treatment of serious injuries, according to a joint statement from Mayor Pete Buttigieg’s office and South Bend Police.

Mills is expected to recover from his injuries. The Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms will investigate the cause of the incident.

No further information about the incident has been released.
