Master plan for industrial sites in New Carlisle approved by county commissioners

A 2-million dollar infusion of cash is coming to the New Carlisle area.

It comes courtesy of the St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners, who voted 2-1 Tuesday to approve a $2.3 million master plan to get the northwestern section of the county ready for industrial businesses.

St. Joseph County’s economic development director, Bill Schalliol, told the South Bend Tribune the ideas is to have at least three shovel-ready sites by mid-2018 so the county can catch “big fish.”

The New Carlisle area has been tapped as a possible candidate for a $1.6 billion Toyota-Mazda plant.

Funding for the plan will come from the New Carlisle area TIF district, which has about $12 million in the bank.
