South Bend schools to cut or merge five schools from district

With another decline in the number of students attending South Bend Schools, district superintendent Kenneth Spells unveiled a plan to “right-size” the corporation, which includes shutting down several schools.

Those schools would be Greene Intermediate Center, Brown Intermediate Center and Eggleston Elementary School.

Students who attend Perley Fine Arts Academy will move to Nuner Primary Center. Students in fifth grade at any SBCSC school will move to elementary schools and students in 6th through 8th grades will attend middle schools.

The start and end times for school days will change, as well.

It’s not known at this point how many jobs would be affected. Also, the plan is not a done deal, yet. It will need to be reviewed by officials and the school board.

The public will also have a chance to sound off on Nov. 27. A vote is expected before Christmas.
