Explosion rocks business southwest of South Bend

(Andrea Alvarez/ABC 57)

An explosion rocked a South Bend business Thursday morning.

Firefighters were called at about 10 a.m. to an incident at Abtrex Industries, located on Market Street near the State Road 23/Ireland Road intersection just southwest of South Bend city limits.

St. Joseph County dispatchers say that they were told it was a fire at first, but when they arrived, it turned out to be an explosion. Photos taken by ABC 57 show significant damage to the side of the building, with a hole blown out of a concrete wall and concrete chunks and other debris spread out all over the lawn and road.

No one was injured. It’s not yet known what caused the explosion.
