GOP Senate primary field is set following key deadline

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The field is set for Indiana’s Republican U.S. Senate primary after a key deadline winnowed down the number of contenders.
U.S. Reps. Luke Messer and Todd Rokita, as well as former state Rep. Mike Braun will vie against each other for a chance to challenge Democratic Sen. Joe Donnelly in November.

State law requires Senate candidates to submit the signatures of at least 500 registered voters from each of Indiana’s nine congressional districts to qualify for the May primary ballot.

The deadline to submit petitions and candidate paperwork was at noon Friday. Several Republicans had declared their candidacy, but didn’t file petitions to make the primary field.

The primary election will be held May 8.
