Controlled grass burning at Indiana Dunes this week

If you see a fire at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore this week, don’t be alarmed.

Experienced burn units are purposely setting grass fires at the lakeshore this week. WSBT reports there are two reasons for the burns:

  1. To maintain the unique habitats at the Dunes and reduce any invasive species.
  2. To prevent future wildfires by burning off excessive undergrowth.

Burns are also scheduled near Dune Acres and Beverly Shores.
