South Shore re-routing options explored by South Bend

The most expensive option for the South Shore Line’s re-routing in South Bend might have the biggest benefit to the city.

The results of a feasibility study were reviewed Thursday night. South Bend is looking at options to relocate its existing terminal at the airport to make it faster for travelers to get to and from Chicago.

Moving the current station downtown would cost $102 million, but could bring the city four times that in economic impact over 10 years.

Other options include the Honeywell site off of North Bendix ($23.9 million), a new airport station ($29.5 million), rehabbing the existing Amtrak station ($31 million), and the new South Bend Chocolate Factory site ($44 million).

No final decision is expected any time soon.

Would it not make a little more sense to include St Joseph county officials in this discussion? All the comments are coming from the Mayor of South Bend.
