Update: Power has now been restored.
Our original story…
An underground electrical fire is believed to have been the cause of a Monday morning power outage in South Bend.
Roughly 2100 customers were still without power as they woke up, most of them in an area south of the Notre Dame Campus and north of the U.S. 20 Bypass.
Fire crews had responded to smoke coming from a manhole after the cover popped out of the ground late Sunday night. An underground utility access point west of the bridge on LaSalle is said to be the likely cause.
Crews continue to work the problem and hope to have power restored by 11 a.m.
