The family of a Granger teenager who was killed by a falling basketball hoop has filed a lawsuit.

Nolan Gerwels died last month from injuries after a rim, backboard and supporting bracket came out of the wall and gave him a head injury. He was playing basketball at his home in the 10000 block of Arcadian Court at the time.

Named in the lawsuit are Dick’s Sporting Goods, Goalsetter Systems, Century Builders, and E-W Construction.

The family tells ABC 57 Nolan died of reckless and wanton misconduct, rather than an accident, due to improperly installed equipment. They say the bolts were not sunk into studs or any sturdy wood when the hoop was put up.

I’m guessing the kid was hanging from the rim and that it’s his own fault.
