A South Bend Police officer has returned to duty after coming back from a training injury.

Sergeant Harvey Mills was injured in a routine bomb squad training exercise in October, suffering serious burns, bone breaks, and damage to his eyes and ears.

Nine months of recovery later, he’s back at work and showing little evidence of the extensive injuries he suffered in the explosion.

Police Chief Scott Ruskowski has asked the ATF to investigate the cause of the explosion, but there is no word how long that process might take.

Mills is a 26-year veteran of the SBPD, spending 17 years on the bomb squad.
