The family of the South Bend Police Officer injured in a training accident at a bomb disposal incident is updating his condition.

The family of Sgt. Harvey Mills says he is recovering well, a little over a week after his near-fatal incident on Oct. 3.

Jim Caldwell, Mills’ brother-in-law, told WNDU it’s difficult to say how long Mills will be recovering from his injuries in Indianapolis, where he has undergone several surgeries. Additional surgeries await.

Mills sustained several fractures, temporary loss of his eyesight, ruptured ear drums, multiple burns, shrapnel wounds, and a broken arm in the blast.

The family says he remains in great spirits.
