SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — A skate park in South Bend will keep its doors open after a recent crowdfunding campaign raised $17,000.

The South Bend Tribune reports that the Kitchen Skate Park was struggling to stay afloat.

It was opened seven years ago by Brett “Mad Dog” Banasiewicz, a South Bend native and former championship BMX biker. It’s chock-full of ramps and equipment for BMX bikers, skateboarders and scooter riders.

But even with an army of volunteers and revenue from concession sales, it proved difficult to pay for upkeep, rent and operations.

Organizers of the campaign hoped to raise $15,000. Instead, they got $17,000, which Banasiewicz says was invested directly back into the park.

He says it’s important to keep the place open because it is an outlet and training ground for many youngsters.
