INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Indiana Senate has unanimously approved a bill that would ban the release of details in child neglect or abuse deaths to safeguard criminal cases.

The Senate voted 48-0 on Tuesday to approve the bill, which now goes to Gov. Eric Holcomb.

The wide-ranging legislation includes a provision that would stop the release of information from the Indiana Department of Child Services while an investigation or criminal prosecution is ongoing in a child’s death.

The Journal Gazette reports the Indiana Prosecuting Attorneys Council had sought that provision. The council’s executive director, Dave Powell, has said the goal was not to keep information from the public, but to protect criminal cases.

Prosecutors pushed for the ban so that juries aren’t tainted and to prevent trials from being moved to another county.
