A South Bend Police officer shot a dog that attacked a fellow officer.

Officers were called to the 1300 block of S. 33rd Street around 8:50 p.m. on Thursday, March 28, by neighbors who reported a suspicious person, according to a South Bend Police Department news release.

Upon locating the person, officers went to an address to verify the individual lived where he claimed.

When the owner of the address opened the door, a dog ran out.

An officer on scene tried to retreat from the charging dog but fell to the ground. The dog then bit the officer’s leg, according to the news release.

Another officer fired and the dog disengaged. The dog then attacked the officer again and was shot or shot at a second time, the news release stated.

The officer was taken to the hospital for his injuries.

The dog was taken to an emergency veterinarian hospital.

An internal investigation into the shooting will take place.
