Elkhart man arrested for arson after allegedly setting his house on fire

A man was arrested on a preliminary charge of arson after his home went up in flames.

Fire crews were called to the 1800 block of Belmont Avenue around 2:10 p.m. on Friday, May 3, where they saw heavy smoke pouring from the two-story home.  Crews put the flames out in the first floor, but the fire spread quickly to the second floor and burned through the roof in one area

Manuel Buitendorp, 58, was taken into custody for allegedly setting the fire. His adult son was in the home at the time, according to 95.3 MNC’s reporting partners at ABC 57. He was able to get out of the home safely.

Buitendorf was treated for smoke inhalation at the hospital before his arrest.
