Latest SBPD Public Safety meeting focused on pursuit policy

The latest meeting to give the community a chance to speak up about South Bend Police Department policies was held Tuesday night at the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center.

The meeting focused on scenarios and real-life situations that cause an officer to decide whether or not a vehicle pursuit is called for. The policy states that a vehicle pursuit is an active attempt by an officer in an authorized emergency vehicle to apprehend a fleeing suspect who is actively attempting to elude the police. It calls on officers to place a priority on public safety and end a pursuit if it becomes too dangerous to the public.

At the meeting, the police stated the position that officers are held accountable for mistakes they make.
