Just a couple weeks after Alyssa Shepherd was found guilty by a jury on three counts of reckless homicide, along with felony passing a school bus with a stop arm extended, and a misdemeanor for criminal recklessness, Wednesday marks the one-year anniversary of when she hit and killed three siblings at a school bus stop just north of Rochester in Fulton County.

Shepherd’s sentencing is on December 18th at the Fulton County Courthouse, facing a maximum possible sentence of 21.5 years. She remains free on bail until that day.

Last week, Indiana Senator Todd Young along with State Representative Jackie Walorski were in Washington, D.C. during National School Bus Safety Week, where they participated in a live demonstration of technology that is aimed at preventing illegal passing of stopped school buses.

Senator Young speaking in Washington: “We cannot accept accidents like this. Last week’s demo of school bus safety technology was an opportunity to raise support for the Stop for School Buses Act and spread awareness for the much-needed review of existing safety laws surrounding our school buses.”

Young and Walorski joined U.S. Representative Julia Brownley (D-CA) and Senator Gary Peters (D-MI), who are all sponsors of the Stop for School Buses Act, which talks about ways to prevent and stop illegal passing of a school bus when children are present.

The school bus that was featured at the event showcased technology such as additional cameras on the sides of school buses to capture vehicles, license plate numbers and even driver’s faces. Additional lighting was seen on the bus, including on the rear emergency door which included a flashing stop sign along with the words “do not pass.”
