Gov. Whitmer signs cough suppressant bill

Cough syrup containing a non-regulated ingredient, dextromethorphan, is on display on a store shelf at an Edmond, Okla., pharmacy as seen Thursday, May 18, 2006. A state lawmaker said opposition from grocers and convenience stores is responsible for the failure of his bill to stop teenagers from getting high on cough syrup containing the non-regulated ingredient. Michigan’s governor has signed a bill that would ban the sale of an over-the-counter cough suppressant to minors without a prescription.

It’s a restriction on an ingredient called DXM that has been abused by teenagers looking for a hallucinogenic high.

The bill signed by Governor Whitmer on Thursday states that customers will be asked for an ID unless they are at least 25 years old.

Anyone who sells products containing the substance to customers 18 and under will face civil fines.
