The driver of a semi is lucky to have received only non-life-threatening injuries after a crash sent the semi cab he was in down a steep embankment and onto the railroad tracks below.
The collision happened around 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 31, at mile marker 102 on the westbound Indiana Toll Road.
The preliminary investigation showed that the driver of a white 2013 Freightliner towing double trailers lost control of the rig.
The Freightliner left the roadway to the left, crashing through a guardrail and striking a concrete barrier wall. The cab of the Freightliner broke free from the double trailers, traveled down the steep embankment, coming to rest on the passenger side on the railroad tracks below. The trailers slid down the concrete barrier wall and came to a rest hanging on the edge of the overpass.
The driver, a 40-year-old man from Richton Park, IL, was able to get out of the semi by climbing out of the windshield. He was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash which Indiana State Police say likely saved him from serious injuries.
The driver was taken to Elkhart General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The left lane of the Indiana Toll Road remained closed for several hours for clean-up and vehicle removal.
