A familiar name is throwing his hat in the ring for the St. Joseph County Council. Former South Bend Common Councilman Derek Dieter has officially filed to run for the District 2 spot.

He sent out the following statement earlier this week:

SOUTH BEND – Former South Bend Common Councilman Derek Dieter today has filed his
candidacy for Saint Joseph County Commissioner District 2 on the Republican ticket.
Derek brings 40+ years of public service to the people of Saint Joseph County. From his 37
honorable years serving on the South Bend Police department to his 12 years serving on South Bend Common Council, 5 of which he served as Council President.

Derek Dieter is a strong leader who will bring energy and a pragmatic approach to the problems and opportunities facing our county. Large swaths have been overlooked and taken for granted for decades – this will change with Derek.

Monthly meetings will be held for the forgotten citizens of New Carlisle, North Liberty,
Crumstown, Walkerton, Lakeville, Wyatt, the West Side of South Bend. Our county stands at a crossroads. We must choose one of two paths: Growth and progress or dysfunction and decline. For too long we have been taken for granted by our elected officials. This will change with Derek Dieter.

Derek has already begun his march toward the nomination and victory. He very much looks to working alongside you so that everyone has a seat at the table and unleash the potential of our citizens. “I’ve been serving Saint Joseph County and South Bend since 1976. As a police officer, council member, coach, community mentor and the private sector through my security business. All of these experiences make me the best choice for the 2nd District County Commissioner of Saint Joseph County”
