Fire fueled by wind consumers garage, convertible in Elkhart

(Bill Beck/Elkhart Truth)

A fire caused by a rotting tree set ablaze and fueled by wind resulted in heavy damage to a garage in Elkhart.

Fire crews were called around 1:20 p.m. on Friday, May 8, to the 3100 block of Burr Oak Avenue.

Upon arrival, crews found flames coming from the west end of a wood frame unattached garage.

The garage overhead door had to be cut away for firefighters to gain entry.

Inside, they found a convertible that was destroyed by the fire.

Investigators say the occupant had been burning away a rotten stump from a fallen tree that was too close to the building and the embers assisted by strong winds started the building on fire.

The fire was quickly extinguished with no injuries to firefighters or occupants.
