Washington Park beach, zoo in Michigan City closed due to social distancing concerns

There is one less beach you can go to cool off this weekend as Washington Park in Michigan City is closed for at least a week.

The mayor of Michigan City has ordered it all closed for at least a week due a “huge influx of out of state visitors.”

The closure, which also includes the zoo, comes after LaPorte County Commissioners passed a mandate for face masks that includes public areas within six feet of others.

Parry told WGN in Chicago that he knows the decision to close the beaches will be “unpopular” but coronavirus numbers in the community are “moving in the wrong direction.”

“We’ve decided to hit the pause button,” Parry told WGN.

The closure prohibits all traffic, including cars, pedestrians and people on bikes. The closure goes through Thursday, July 23, but could be extended.
