An Elkhart police officer is recovering from surgery after he was attacked last week.

Officer Jesse Morganthaler was in the 500 block of S. 5th Street last Wednesday when D’Micah Jones, 26, began fighting with him over marijuana.

ABC 57 News reports Jones punched the officer in the face while he was being detained, which fractured the officer’s jaw and knocked out some teeth.

Officer Morganthaler underwent surgery Tuesday night, and his jaw is wired shut.

Jones is booked in the Elkhart County Correctional Facility on a $75,000 bond.
