Elkhart County to start the school year with online learning only

It’s been back-and-forth all summer but now comes word that all Elkhart County schools will begin the school year with online learning.

Superintendents from around the county took part in a phone conference with health leaders on Thursday, Aug. 6, and they determined the safest thing to do is begin the school year with students, at home, on their computers.

Online learning will last through late September. The first day of class for Goshen is now set for Aug. 11. Baugo begins on Aug. 13. Concord schools start Aug. 12 and all athletics and extra-curricular activities have been suspended.

Why did the Elkhart County Health Officer change her mind in a 24 hour period when the COVID numbers DO NOT JUSTIFY e-learning. What changed her mind? There was no justification. They only said “it is safer.” It looks very political.

Yet no explanation of the science behind the decision. I have it on good authority that activist school teacher unions want to keep schools closed until the end of the year.

They are playing presidential politics with our kids and property tax dollars as pawns. If the want to stay closed for the next 4-months I say they get NO PAY for that period. And I say we do not pay the school portion of the property tax for that same period. Let the survive on unemployment benefits as many of the parents are surviving on.

At the same time Boys and Girls Clubs in the country are preparing to baby-sit students who are not in school the schools are being closed. Where oh where is the country health officer coming down on B&G Clubs???

Once again we have wok-a-dopes that are whirling dervishes of incompetent contradictions.

Close the schools, sell the buildings and let parents control the choice of curriculum. Maybe the children will actually learn how to read and use mathematics. For too long our schools and teachers have been focused on union activities instead of education.
