Indiana concealed carry permit change moves from House to Senate

A bill that would eliminate Indiana’s concealed carry permit requirement is still moving through the State Government.

It passed through the State House this week, and if approved by the Senate it could be a law by March of next year.

Local police departments would be impacted, as they collect fees for the permits. Permits are down in Indiana in recent months, possibly as Hoosiers await the results of the legislation.

I really don’t see the relevance of police agencies losing revenue. They shouldn’t have turned a right into a revenue stream to begin with!

What other God given, guaranteed by the constitution civil right requires government permission to exercise?

I don’t think it’s a concealed carry license. It’s a license to carry a gun period. If you have a License in Indiana it is never a concealed permit.

IN has never had a concealed carry permit. The IN License To Carry Handgun or LTCH does not specify how you carry; concealed or not. There is no license needed to carry a long gun.

This change to the law only eliminates the requirement to request permission and pay a fee to carry. It does not change who can carry legally. If you are not a permitted person (like say a felon) you still have no right to go armed in public. Of course felons rarely follow any law ever so it just levels the playing field for the law abiding citizens.

For purposes of interstate reciprocity a permit will still be available for purchase from the state.

It is unfortunate that any law needed to be written to return a right to the citizens…and well past time to do so.

I have never agreed with having to pay to utilize the right I was born with. I do think law enforcement agencies need additional funding, but it shouldn’t come from the people that are choosing to legally protect themselves. Maybe additional fines upon criminal convictions to help find the police, those are the ones that are the reason they need the additional funding in the first place.
