Braun says “leave it to the states” when denouncing H.R. 1

The first hearings were held on Wednesday in the Senate to discuss a voting reform bill known as “H. R. 1”

It’s a bill that Democrats say would expand voting rights, clamp down on voter suppression, and change campaign finance laws. Republicans contend the bill would also put more power over elections in the hands of the federal government.

Sen. Mike Braun, who is among many ardent denouncers of H. R. 1, said that if there are any problems with elections in the United States, the states are the ones that are supposed to solve them.

“Not only constitutionally is this a state prerogative, but we need to learn from the laboratory of states,” he said. “We have 50 different states. The constitution says to keep it there. We need to find that sweet spot that works.”

In essence, Braun says the constitution dictates that it is up to individual states to figure out what systems work when it comes to running elections and what systems don’t. He adds that is not the purview of the federal government.

“This (bill) will probably be the test of the filibuster as well,” said Braun. “In my mind, for this to get through, for all the reasons it shouldn’t you’d have to push the envelope on this issue.”

The filibuster is a procedural rule in the Senate that requires a bill to have 60 votes in order to end debate on that particular bill. Without those 60 votes, the bill can’t move on to a final vote.

There was so little fraud during the 2020 election that the first thing the Democrats want to do is enshrine the fraud into law…
