Michigan once again at the center of the national COVID surge

When it comes to the severity of COVID cases in Michigan, history is repeating itself.

Medical officials in Michigan are worried about the serious nature of a possible fourth surge in the state, and are telling the CDC that current conditions are as bad as they’ve seen to date.

Hospitalizations in the state are up four-fold from just two weeks ago, and CDC officials worry that the trend in Michigan — which is having a tough time with the UK variant — could spread across the country.

CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said Monday that a boost in vaccinations alone isn’t the answer, even as Governor Whitmer urged the government to send more shots. Walensky said the state should shut things down again as it fights the building surge in cases.

Whitmer has shown reluctance to issuing new restrictions in the state.
