Man, 44, who suffered medical emergency after arrest has died

The man who police say suffered a medical emergency after being taken into custody for causing problems at the fire station at Bittersweet and Anderson Roads in Granger has died.

St. Joseph County Police were called to the fire station on Monday night, where they made contact with Brian DeBeck, 44.

After a struggle with officers at the county jail, DeBeck began to show signs of having a medical emergency.

Medics were called and DeBeck was taken to Memorial Hospital. He died on Wednesday night.

An autopsy is underway.

The St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office released the following information:

On Wednesday evening, April 21, Brian DeBeck, 44, was pronounced
deceased at Memorial Hospital.

An autopsy was begun today in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and will continue tomorrow.

The St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit (CMHU) continues to actively investigate, and we will provide further information as we are able to do so.

Original Release, 4.20.21:

Last evening 4/19/21 around 8:00 p.m., Saint Joseph County Police Officers were dispatched to fire station #25 located at Bittersweet and Anderson roads in Granger reference an unwanted person causing problems. Officers arrived and made contact with Brian DeBeck, M/W, age 44.

During the course of their investigation and after a brief struggle, officers arrested DeBeck for Resisting Law Enforcement. He was transported to the County jail where he continued to struggle with officers.

DeBeck began to show signs of having a medical emergency and
medics were called.

He was transported to Memorial Hospital, where he remains in critical
condition.

The St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit (CMHU) is actively investigating this case, per protocol, and is reviewing in car camera video, jail video, conducting witness interviews and trying to ascertain what Mr. DeBeck’s medical emergency was. This is an on-going investigation.
