INDOT making plea to slow down in work zones

Construction season is getting underway, and INDOT is making its annual plea to watch your speed in the cone zones.

Last year, INDOT says there were 3,800 crashes in work zones — that’s roughly one every two hours. 26 people died in those accidents. Deputy commissioner Shane Spears says while there was less traffic last year because of the pandemic, those who were on the road drove faster — and that’s the biggest contributor to work zone accidents.

Spears says people do slow down when they see a police car monitoring work zone traffic, but there are only so many troopers to go around. He says you need to think about the workers behind the cones, and slow down so they can go home after their shift.
