A Nappanee man accused of attempting to kill his mother and set their home on fire has been found mentally competent to stand trial.

The Goshen News says 21-year-old Christopher Hochstetler is charged with attempted murder and attempted arson after police say he tried to ignite his home while his mother was inside in November 2025.

Investigators say he used a candle lighter and other materials before the fire alarm alerted the victim, allowing her to escape.

Court officials say he has also been found sane at the time of the alleged offense. His jury trial is now scheduled for July 6.
