Double shooting in Mishawaka determined to be murder-suicide

Police have confirmed that the deaths of two men in Mishawaka were a murder-suicide.

Officers found the bodies of 29-year-old Joseph Banks and 23-year-old Trevor Danneffel inside a home on Burdette Street Tuesday night. Autopsies determined that Banks was shot and killed by Danneffel, who then shot himself.

Shortly before 11 p.m. Tuesday, the Mishawka Police Dispatch Center got a phone call from someone at 819 Burdette Street in Mishawaka. The caller told police that a person had been shot. Mishawaka dispatchers lost contact with the caller as officers began arriving in the neighborhood.

Officers knocked on the door of the home, but no one answered. After several failed attempts to reach anyone at the home, SWAT members entered the residence and found the bodies of Banks and Danneffel.

Investigators learned that Banks and Daneffel were in a romantic relationship and lived together on Burdette St. Evidence shows that Danneffel shot Banks, and then called Mishawaka police dispatch saying that he shot Banks. Daneffel then shot himself before officers could make contact with him.
