The St. Joseph County Police Department is one step closer to getting body cameras for officers.

At a meeting Tuesday night, the St. Joseph County Council voted to move the idea forward for a public hearing and a vote August 10.

The county received $26 million from the American Rescue Plan and about $2.2 million of that money would be used to fund body cameras, new car cameras, tasers, and a virtual training system, reports WNDU.

WNDU reports funds from the American Rescue Plan would also be used for technology improvements and a community-wide drinking water protection plan.

If body cameras are approved, the police department says it would take about 60 days to get them installed and ready to go.
