Indiana has issued another 100-million dollars in local road repair grants.

Half of Indiana’s counties and about 170 cities  and towns received money in the latest round of Community Crossing grants. Around twice that many applied.

The grants range from 20 communities getting the $1 million-dollar maximum to $19,000 for the town of Frankton.

The program began under then-Governor Mike Pence back in 2016. Now it has awarded a billion dollars for local road, street and bridge maintenance. INDOT Commissioner Joe McGuinness says the program has had more impact than that, since communities must match the money they receive with funds of their own.

The law establishing the program requires at least half of each twice-yearly distribution go to counties with fewer than 50,000 people. That’s 64 of the state’s 92 counties.

Seven towns are receiving grants for the first time since the program began.
