Michigan sugar beet crop is over-abundant

Life is pretty sweet for sugar beet farmers in Michigan. A little too sweet.

Michigan Sugar is requiring farmers to leave some of their beets unharvested this year, due to a bumper crop and an overabundance.

Officials tell M-Live that they expect the crop to easily smash the previous record numbers of 31.64 tons per square acre, but just by how much is anyone’s guess. An estimate late last month expected the tonnage to be 34…but it could be closer to 36 or more. Some areas have already reported 50 tons per square acre.

Growers have harvested more than 85% of this year’s crop, produced more than 440 million pounds of sugar, and created concerns about just how long it might take to process the rest of the crop.
