Suspect, officers, involved in deadly shooting on Hively Ave. in Elkhart identified

UPDATE (12/16): We now know the name of the man shot and killed in an officer-involved shooting in Elkhart.

Jahad Patterson, 20, died after a confrontation, early Wednesday morning, at a shopping center at Hively and Benham Avenues.

Police were called to the scene on the report of possible vandalism. Patrolman Scott Swanson and Sgt. Ben Martin, who fired the shots during a confrontation, killing Patterson, remain on administrative leave, pending the outcome of the homicide unit investigation and the Elkhart County prosecutor’s review.

ORIGINAL STORY: One man is dead following an officer-involved shooting that happened in Elkhart early Wednesday morning.

Police report they received a call just before 5:30 a.m. about a man attempting to throw a bicycle into the window of a business near the intersection of W. Hively and Benham avenues.

When officers arrived to the scene, they attempted to confront the man. Two officers then fired their weapons, killing the suspect at the scene.

The man was reportedly armed at the time of the incident. His identity has not been released.

Police report the two officers directly involved in the shooting have been put on paid administrative leave pending the results of the investigation, which has been taken over by the Elkhart County Homicide Unit.

Two other officers were witnesses at the scene of the incident.

Police report businesses will be closed in the area while the investigation continues.
