Man, woman shot and killed at Franklin & Ewing in South Bend

Two people were killed in a shooting in South Bend.

The shooting happened around 2:45 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 19, in the area of Franklin Street and Ewing Avenue.

Police arrived at the scene to find two people suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.

Both people were pronounced dead at the scene.

South Bend Police issued the following news release late Sunday morning:

On December 19 at approximately 2:45 am, South Bend Police Department officers responded to the area of Franklin Street and Ewing Avenue, South Bend, IN on the report of shots fired.
Upon arrival, officers located 22-year-old ShaeLeigh Zeiger and 31-year-old Brandon Smith, both from South Bend, IN, suffering from apparent gunshot injuries. Despite lifesaving attempts by South Bend Police and Fire Department paramedics, Zeiger and Smith succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced deceased. Their families have been notified of their deaths.
South Bend Police Department officers secured the scene and a representative from the St. Joseph County Coroner’s Office was contacted. The South Bend Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit is handling the investigation.
Several individuals have been interviewed. There is no known threat to the community, and at this time appears to be an isolated incident.
This is an active and on-going investigation. Autopsies will be conducted in Kalamazoo, MI., and community/media will be updated when more information is available for release.
