The St. Joseph County Public Library is going fine-free.
Starting in January, you’ll no longer be charged a late fee when you return a book past its due date.
They’re also no longer charging rental fees for DVDs. The library is removing all preexisting late fines for all library accounts – so that everyone gets a fresh start.
Their goal is to increase access and eliminate financial barriers that keep community members from using the library.
Items will still have a due date and you will receive reminders about overdue materials.
If an item is not returned within the renewal window, you may be charged a replacement fee. Your card will be inactive until the item is returned.

Have we learned nothing by watching what happened when Chicago did this? Seriously?
Sure, more people renewed their library cards, but… wait for it… THERE WAS NOTHING TO CHECK OUT! Nobody returned anything anymore.
This is leftist idiocy, implemented by management, and ultimately it’s the citizens who will suffer the effects of the illusion of equity.
I agree with Charles, what is the incentive to return anything? What is the source of funding that allows such largess? Last time I checked other areas of government were taking carve outs out of the libraries “dedicated” funds. As one who has donated money to the library because I believed in what they were doing will another organization more in need of my donations like 5 Star Life and St. Margaret’s House. Dumb and dumber, how much more did the remodel cost than what was budgeted? Is that tree in the children’s play area on the first floor a money tree?
