A lion at the Potawatomi Zoo in South Bend was humanely euthanized, the zoo announced Tuesday.

The male lion, Onyo, was euthanized on Dec. 23 due to age-related health and mobility issues. He was 20 years old, which is a very “advanced” age for a male African lion, the zoo said in a Facebook post.

“A beloved (and noisy) icon of the South Bend community, Onyo was one of our visitors’ favorite animals to see,” the post reads. “We’re all heartbroken to lose him, but we’re grateful we had so many years to appreciate his unique traits and characteristics.”

Onyo’s primary keeper, Gretchen, cared for him his whole life. She says Onyo “brought her joy every day.”
