One killed, two other hurt in LaPorte County chain-reaction crash

One person was killed and two others were hurt in a chain-reaction crash on I-94 in LaPorte County.

The collision happened around 5:30 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 6, near the exit for U.S. 20 when a Dodge Ram rolled to a rest in the far-right lane.

The vehicle was struck by a Chevy cargo van.  After hitting the truck, the van spun directly into the path of a semi.

The semi smashed into the passenger side of the van.

A GMC truck, then spun out, hitting the center median wall, and then colliding with trailer of the semi.

A passenger in the van was declared dead at the scene by the LaPorte County Coroner. A second passenger was critically hurt and airlifted to a Chicago hospital. A third passenger was initially pinned in the van and taken to a hospital in Michigan City for treatment.

The roadway was closed for more than four hours for crash investigation.
