A woman from Gary has agreed to serve a year of home detention and a year on probation after pleading guilty to buying guns and giving them to a convicted felon gang member.

24-year-old Brianna Williams-Heard, of Gary, was sentenced this week in federal court.

According to court documents, Williams-Heard bought three guns from two federally-licensed dealers in 2020, giving them to the gang member.

She also falsely reported one of the guns stolen. Police discovered the gun in the possession of the gang member.

What Williams-Heard did is called a straw purchase, or buying a gun for someone who cannot legally possess a firearm.

Buying a gun for someone else, anyone else, is a straw purchase (if they give you the money to buy the weapon and you’re not buying it as a gift). Buying one for a felon gang member should warrant a much stiffer sentence.

It’s illegal to give a gun to a known felon, it’s illegal for the felon to possess the gun…gee it’s almost as if criminals don’t care about the law.

Hopefully, Brianna is now a felon also and unable to purchase guns in the future.
