Century-old building in South Bend to be renovated into commercial center

Renovations are underway at a century-old building in South Bend.

The former Ward’s Bakery Building on Portage Avenue dates back to 1919, and the windows were bricked up when the building transformed into a warehouse.

Now, WNDU reports that a $4.2 million dollar project seeks to turn it into a collaborative commercial village. After the renovations, it’s hoped that tenants will utilize the roughly 50 spaces and become part of the new commercial center.

The Bakery Group hopes to start accepting tenants next year.
