When Rio Alred committed suicide last month she was just 12 years old. Her family says she had been bullied at school. Now the Elkhart Common Council has unanimously passed a resolution that supports anti-bullying efforts, including Rio’s Rainbow, a non-profit started by Alred’s family.

The council recognized “the right of every child to grow in a community that is safe and free from bullying, violence, harassment and discrimination,” according to Mayor Rod Roberson.

Alred had alopecia, which is an auto-immune disease that makes a person’s hair fall out.Her mother spoke at the council meeting.

“I am being called to help other families who are struggling with bullying and help them through each day,” she said.

Roberson said the city will stand against bullying.

“The Common Council of the City of Elkhart supports the efforts of Rio’s Rainbow and all organizations that address the prevention, intervention and elimination of bullying,” said Roberson, when reading the resolution.

The resolution passed 8-0.
