At the State Board of Education meeting on Wednesday, May 4, the Indiana Department of Education provided updates on the development of the Indiana Graduates Prepared to Succeed (Indiana GPS) dashboard. The dashboard, which will provide all Hoosiers with access to relevant and transparent information on school performance, is set to launch this fall.

“Over the last year, an unparalleled range of stakeholders including educators, families, community partners, business leaders, and students have come together with a shared mission of re-envisioning how we measure school performance, including knowledge and skill development,” said Dr. Katie Jenner, Indiana Secretary of Education. “Empowered by this collaborative work, this fall we’re set to launch the first iteration of the Indiana GPS dashboard, providing a relevant and user-friendly tool that will display how our students are performing based on a variety of important indicators.”

This update includes an overview of work currently underway that will help measure each indicator of school performance. In grades K-8, this includes measuring indicators such as third grade literacy, student attendance and completion of advanced coursework. In high school, this includes measuring indicators like students’ high school graduation on-track status prior to senior year, college and career coursework and diploma strength.

Beyond these initial indicators that will be displayed on the dashboard’s first iteration this fall, IDOE is also working with stakeholders to measure aspirational indicators that will be available in future updates of the Indiana GPS dashboard. IDOE is also committed to continuing to work with school and community stakeholders to support local indicators that will also be displayed in future phases of the dashboard.

Dashboard development follows the SBOE’s unanimous approval last year of five characteristics that best indicate a student’s preparation for success after high school, as well as the indicators that will measure these characteristics. These characteristics and indicators will be the basis for the dashboard.
