State trooper hurt after becoming pinned by vehicle, armed Good Samaritan stops suspect

A state police officer was hospitalized after being pinned between a car and barrier in northwest Indiana.

It happened around 2 a.m. on Saturday, July 23,  on I-80/94 near Calumet Avenue when a driver,, Bryan Smith, crashed his car into a fire truck and a nearby Subaru, which shifted and pinned the officer.

The crash injured not only the officer and Smith, but also a passenger in Smith’s car. After the crash, Smith tried to run, but some Good Samaritans blocked him with their vehicle.

One of the Good Samaritans, who was armed with a handgun, drew his weapon and ordered Smith to stop.

No word on the passenger’s condition, but the officer is okay.

Smith is currently in jail.
