The Elkhart Common Council has voted in favor to issue driver cards to undocumented immigrants.
It was a 6 to 2 vote in favor of the legislation.
Driver cards allow undocumented immigrants to drive legally, if they have insurance and training.
The city will not issue the cards, but are supporting the legislation at the statehouse.
Elkhart Mayor, Rod Roberson, says that the undocumented residents in Elkhart are active members of the community and deserve the right to participate in it.
The City of Elkhart sent the following news release to 95.3 MNC regarding the vote:
Elkhart, Indiana – Tonight, in a 6-2 vote, the Common Council of the City of Elkhart passed a resolution supporting legislation at the statehouse in Indiana to issue driver cards.
With support of state lawmakers from both sides of the aisle and from law enforcement statewide, this driver card program is an effort to make driving safer for everyone.
Indiana State Senator Blake Doriot and State Senator Linda Rogers attended tonight’s meeting and provided context for this legislation and answered questions from the Council.
Similarly to when the City of Elkhart passed resident ID cards, these driver cards recognize the contributions of undocumented immigrants to the City of Elkhart. They are parents, neighbors, employees, and add tremendous value to our community and our economy. These cards will give all drivers the opportunity to drive legally and safely with insurance and adequate driver training.
It is important to note that the City of Elkhart will not be issuing these cards, but rather are lending support for the legislation at the statehouse in Indianapolis. While this legislation will go through the process in Indianapolis, state lawmakers have been firm that this card will not allow for voting or other federal privileges. It will only be recognized in Indiana and require drivers to be properly trained and carry insurance.

I have always said Elkhart is stronger together and tonight was a prime example of why. Elkhart’s undocumented residents are active members of our community and they deserve the right to be able to participate fully without fear of a mundane traffic stop. The support from our law enforcement community is also telling as they understand the increase of safety for drivers and for officers when drivers are able to drive legally.” – Mayor Rod Roberson

VOTE THEM OUT! No elected representative should support this.
If you want to reduce crime, you don’t make things easier for the people committing the crime. Entering the country illegally is a crime! Deportation, not documentation, is the right course of action here.
If they want to “participate in our community” then they should come here LEGALLY. It’s not hard to understand.

Does anyone really believe that they will actually get, and keep insurance? They will get it only when needed, then drop it asap.
This is about the dumbest thing the local government could do. My wife was rear ended by an illegal with no insurance even though she showed an insurance card to police. Our insurance company had to pay the whole bill.
